Global competence is a key indicator of 21st-century talent and represents the ability to participate in global competition and collaboration. In the face of an uncertain future, how to become a global citizen—one who thinks innovatively, dares to explore the unknown, has the capacity to go global, takes initiative, and contributes to the creation of a brilliant human civilization—is a challenge every young person must face.
To cultivate Chinese youth with global competence, we have built a Global Competence Model. This model is envisioned as a grand building of global competence: its foundation is rooted in Chinese culture, while the top level represents a global vision. Supporting it are six major pillars— two hard skills and four soft skills. The hard skills include humanities and technological literacy (STREAM) and foreign language skills. The soft skills are the four core competencies of international talent, known as the 4Cs: Critical Thinking, Communication, Collaboration, and Creativity & Innovation.
It is worth emphasizing that global competence must remain grounded in one’s cultural roots. Whether studying abroad or living overseas, students must never forget the rivers, mountains, and stars that have shaped them. Only those with a strong sense of national identity and pride will truly earn respect abroad. Children must always remember that they are members of China’s younger generation, and that their actions should bring honor to their motherland.
As written in the Book of Rites: “When the Great Way prevails, the world belongs to all. The virtuous and capable are chosen, trust and harmony are valued.” Global competence is not about forgetting one’s heritage or blindly admiring foreign cultures. It is about upholding dignity and integrity, drawing strength from the deep roots of Chinese culture, and cultivating a broad perspective for the future. With this strength, young people can embrace the world with ambition and contribute to the building of a shared future for humankind.
