Why do you place such importance on uncovering the essence of mathematics? What does this mean for students?
For me, mathematics has never been merely about “calculations.” It is a language, a way to express the logical structure of the world. From a young age, I received a relatively systematic elite education, attending the top schools in the province throughout middle and high school, and smoothly transitioning to Columbia University for college. I have been deeply immersed in both the American and Chinese educational systems. These educational experiences have made me realize that no single piece of knowledge exists in isolation; rather, it is a node within this network.
The true key to understanding mathematics lies not in the number of problems solved, but in your ability to discern the intrinsic connections within this “web.” Through my teaching, I aim to help students move beyond reliance on problem-solving templates toward mastery of underlying logic. This enables them to apply their knowledge flexibly when confronted with new challenges. For young learners, this ability is far more valuable than memorizing solutions to specific problems. It will empower them to maintain clarity and reasoning in any future situation demanding logical thinking and decision-making.
How do you inspire students mathematical potential through teaching?
In my teaching practice, I place particular emphasis on two principles: “teaching according to individual aptitude” and “cultivating behavioral habits.” On one hand, I am thoroughly familiar with the systems and question-setting styles of the three major exam boards—Edexcel, CIE, and AQA—enabling me to tailor teaching content and pace based on students learning stages and areas of strength. On the other hand, I consciously train students in class to develop habits of divergent thinking, team discussion, and self-reflection. Mathematics isnt solely about solitary, stubborn dedication; it can also be a collective exchange of wisdom. Ive witnessed many students who initially feel timid, yet once they gain a sense of accomplishment through the collision of ideas, their enthusiasm is ignited. I chose to join JINQiu International because it allows me to combine “rational teaching” with “humanistic care,” providing students with a growth path that truly suits them.
